At the March 10th National Fire Sprinkler Association – Illinois Chapter meeting, State Coordinator Bob Tinucci and Inspections, Testing & Maintenance (ITM) Committee Chair Shaun Maher presented Palatine Fire Marshal Rick Marek with a recognition award for his commitment to enforcing the NFPA 25 ITM standard for water-based fire protection systems within his community.
“The thing that made Rick Marek stand out from other ITM advocates is that he was proactively enforcing the five-year internal pipe inspection required by the standard,” said Tinucci.
In 2014, Marek sent out a notice (pictured) to business owners, notifying them of the village code’s requirements for a five-year obstruction investigation of fire sprinkler systems. The purpose of the internal inspection is to identify potential issues that could affect sprinkler performance. The fire department gave business owners a one-year grace period to comply.
“Rick Marek is one of the hardest working fire prevention people and this award is just one small way to recognize him for his work, which benefits and protects the citizens and firefighters of Palatine,” said Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board Executive Director Tom Lia.
