The National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) and the NASFM Foundation recently announced the release of the 2nd edition of “Bridging the Gap: A Guide to Implementing a Residential Sprinkler Requirement,” which was created through help received from an Assistance to Firefighters Fire Prevention & Safety Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Because residential fire sprinkler requirements are relatively new to most jurisdictions, there is an overall lack of guidance about their implementation. This guide is intended to provide a roadmap for jurisdictions that have adopted residential fire sprinkler system requirements to help implement the regulation in a logical, business-like manner. This information is based upon successes (and failures) of other jurisdictions that have completed the adoption and initial implementation in the last few years.

Included in this guide are sample policies, procedures, and checklists to assist jurisdictions in formulating their own best practices. These samples are a compilation of those from successful implementations across the country, and are considered “open source” so that anyone can copy, modify, and use them as they see fit. The guide is organized into sections that provide a series of decision points that should be considered as a jurisdiction moves forward with implementation.
A new online course on the NASFM Training webpage has been included as part of the update. Additionally, a new online virtual help-desk has been created where individuals can go for resources and support on residential sprinklers. Tom Lia, executive director of the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board, is excited for the Guide to be presented by NASFM Director of Training Phil Oakes at the upcoming Illinois NFPA 13D Residential Fire Sprinkler Symposium in Addison on March 6, 2013. “We are privileged to have Phil present this program to the symposium’s attendees,” says Lia. “In fact, we are the first in the country to have the program delivered.”  ]]>
